Economic Wisdom from Proverbs 16

Proverbs 16:8 – “Better is a little with righteousness than great income with injustice.” It’s better to be poor and godly than rich and ungodly. But there are lots of examples in the Bible of being rich and godly – Job, Abraham, David, I Timothy 6:17-19, etc. Don’t say more than the Bible says.

Proverbs 16:11 – “A just balance and scales belong to the LORD; all the weights of the bags are His concern.” That little sticker you see on the gas pump about the pump being accurate is a matter of importance in the sight of God – so is not stealing time from your employer by reading this blog on company time.

Proverbs 16:16 – “How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver.” If you have to choose, be like Solomon and choose wisdom.

Proverbs 16:19 – “It is better to be humble in spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud.”

Proverbs 16:26 – “A worker’s appetite works for him, for his hunger urges him on.” Why do we work? Ultimately for the glory of God. But penultimately, to feed ourselves and our families. If you don’t work, you don’t eat – that isn’t just Paul’s command in I Thessalonians 3:10, it’s common sense.
